# Glossary

> Every feudal term in Ashenmarch, translated to plain English.

Ashenmarch speaks in a feudal voice. Here's the full vocabulary, in plain terms:

| Term                          | Plain English                                                     |
| ----------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Campaign / March**          | A run, walk, ride, or paddle — one recorded activity              |
| **House**                     | Your account/identity — your name, crest, and everything you hold |
| **Holding / Territory**       | Land you've claimed on the map                                    |
| **Outpost → Citadel**         | The five territory tiers, weakest to strongest                    |
| **Fortification**             | Defence built by running through your land (effort × km)          |
| **Effort**                    | Your pace vs. your own 30-day average — 0.5× to 2×                |
| **Decay**                     | Tiers dropping when land goes unvisited                           |
| **Unprotected**               | An Outpost decayed to zero defence — free for rivals to take      |
| **Wall**                      | A defensive line built by an out-and-back route                   |
| **District**                  | Two of your territories joined by a Wall, named as one holding    |
| **Siege / Contested**         | A tug-of-war over overlapping ground                              |
| **Ghost territory**           | Unclaimed AI-held land — take it without a fight                  |
| **Rank**                      | Your permanent ladder: Wayfarer → Sovereign                       |
| **Court**                     | A team of players competing for Kingdom Regions                   |
| **Liege / Vassal**            | Court leader / court member                                       |
| **Kingdom Region / Province** | A fixed named map area courts compete to control                  |
| **Royal Summons**             | Your personal invite link to the game                             |
| **Herald / Dispatch**         | Your news feed of realm events                                    |
| **War Council**               | The route planner — chart and save marches                        |
| **Armoury**                   | Your items, earned by personal bests                              |
| **Gold (◉) / Tribute**        | The earned-only currency / income from your holdings              |
| **Treasury / Coffers**        | Your banked Gold — safe from any attacker                         |
| **House Subjects**            | The population of a holding — drives its tribute                  |
| **Upkeep**                    | Small Gold cost of the highest tiers; unpaid = faster decay       |
| **Sellsword**                 | A hired mercenary — garrison (defence) or company (attack)        |
| **Sellsword's Mark**          | The visible flag (and bounty) on a house that hired steel         |
| **Cavalry / Naval**           | Cycling / watersports — same game, their own baselines            |
| **Coat of arms / Crest**      | Your house's emblem, shown everywhere you appear                  |
